The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a national professional accounting body founded under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No. XXXVIII of 1949) for the regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountants in India. ICAI is the second largest professional accounting body globally when it comes to membership second just to American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Any person who want to take part in general practice needs to first make an application and get the certificate of practice from the ICAI. Only members who holds a certificate of practice can only work as auditor or certify documents required by many taxes as well as financial regulatory authorities in India. A person is eligible to apply for membership either by passing all three levels of examinations, stated below are prescribed by ICAI and completing three years of practical training or by availing themselves of exemptions under Mutual Recognition Agreements.
Three Levels of Examinations To Become Chartered Accountant
- The CPT or Common Proficiency Test.
- IPCC or Integrated Professional Competence Course
- CA Final Examination
